Oh Interns…
We posted two ads on our website, and with various universities in DC and surrounding states — we’re looking for a summer intern and a summer law clerk. These are paid positions, so as you can imagine, the response has been pretty good — even though it’s only January. I think last year, we received close to 300 applications for each.
As I’m reading through the resumes, cover letters, and writing samples — I’m struck by how difficult it is for people to follow simple instructions. So a few tips, if you’re looking for a job, or looking for an internship:
- You have my full name, my title, and my email address. Your cover letter should not be addressed to “Human Resources” or “To whom it may concern”.
- Spellcheck is a wonderful thing — however, it doesn’t make you a good writer. Learn how to edit yourself, or find someone who can do this for you. I’m actually reading your letters and writing samples — and if you’re using words out of context, or using incorrect punctuation throughout the document, I’m not going to move you to the next round.
- I’ve asked you for three items: A resume, a cover letter, and a writing sample. Emails without one or more of these items will again cause you to not move to the next round. This isn’t rocket science.
- Our website address is on the ads, it’s in my email address, and you may have even applied through our website. If your cover letter indicates a complete disregard or ignorance of what we do here at [company name], and if you have absolutely no relevant experience or studies — again, guess who’s not moving to round two.
- If you have questions, ask. The candidate who asks questions about the organization or about the required materials isn’t going to be penalized for doing so. I’d rather you ask first than send the wrong things.
Good luck!
